The Lamb family expect to be deported.

Late last week I made a trip to Sydney to cover a story about the Lamb family’s immigration case. Long-story short, the family have been in the country for 16+ years (on various visas), but are now likely to be deported. Things get complicated because their 12 yo son, Aishik, is an Australian citizen. This means that Aishik could stay in Australia under care from the Australian govt, while his parents are deported, or move with them, and lose the opportunities he has in Australia. For them, neither are viable options.

It was a pretty intense morning hearing and shooting their story. And also my first serious attempt at shooting some video! Hopefully the article will bring some extra attention to their case.

Yesterday I briefly visited the Canberra Show for a few pics for a final day story. In my travels I was lucky enough to run into William Shakespeare (ID verified)!

A for-reals ‘carny’, he’s been travelling with the country show train for about 40 years. This year operating the no limits ride.

Greece on film

There is something special about film. Something that cant be replicated digitally. I don’t suppose I’ve actually pinpointed the characteristics, but there are certainly some obvious differences (dependent on the particular film) in terms of colour, grain, texture, and of course, the print sizes/quality available. Not to mention that the cost per shot makes me take it more seriously. Shooting some more film is something I’m hoping to do some more of in my personal work. I’d love to drag my 67 to a fashion or editorial shoot, but turn around times usually bring some limitations…

Enough wank. Here are a few shots taken around the Greek Islands on my lovely little Bronica 645 (with newly discovered light leaks).

Awards finalist :)

It turns out I’m slightly behind the news, but today I found out that I was a finalist in the 2011 PANPA (pacific area newspapers publishers’ organisation) photography awards.

My pic of Nectar Efkarpidis was one of eight finalists in the “Portrait – national, metropolitan” category. I shot the image in Nectar’s apartment in the city. For a guy with a lot of work commitments, he certainly has found some time to spend creating his amazing apartment, developing some constantly evolving spaces which have a lot to say about his personality.

Given that I was up against photographers from the smh, telegraph etc, I’m pretty (very) pleased with the result.

Apparently Switzerland isn’t all about army knives and holey cheese. Plenty of gnarly nature too!

Back to processing in my beloved lightroom. The iPad is great apart from the lack of real raw compatibility. Jpg = the enemy.
